Basic Life Support Medic Training Course

This Nationally Recognised qualification opens up your future opportunities to develop a career as an Ambulance Officer, First Responder, Patient Transport Officer or Basic Life Support Medic. Upon completion, you will be qualified to provide pre-hospital and out-of-hospital basic health care response, as well as patient assessment of those who require urgent medical attention.

Clinical Skills Development

After completing the HLT41115-Certificate IV in Health Care, you will possess the knowledge and skills of a Basic Life Support (BLS) medic. This includes basic airway management, an introduction to 4 lead ECG monitoring and automatic defibrillation, intramuscular injections, oxygen therapies (including nebulised medications), BLS resuscitation, basic drug management and pharmacology.

You will also develop the required skills for primary and secondary patient assessments; and use clinical reasoning to develop treatment plans for ill and injured patients. This is the perfect qualification if you are looking to enhance your existing first aid skills or are looking for something more substantial to gain employment in the private sector as a medic at events and public gatherings.

Drug Therapy Protocols (DTP’s)

Drug therapy protocols (DTP’s) covered within the scope of the HLT41115 – Certificate IV Health Care course include: adrenaline, glucose gel, glucagon, basic cardiac drugs, naloxone, basic pain relief (Skills, Protocols and Pharmacology equivalent to the level – Intern Paramedic Ambulance Service NSW)

Course Duration

Between 12-18 months; including 1 week of clinical workshops and competency reviews at one of the pre hospital emergency training centres on the Gold Coast, Victoria and in NSW.

How do I source my work placement organisation?

You are encouraged to seek local work placement volunteer opportunities as this makes achieving your work placement requirements more likely. Australian Paramedical College does however have existing relationships with host organisations and will regularly advertise these opportunities to students via the Facebook Students Forum, direct emails to cohorts and at Clinical Workshops.

It is important you notify us of your prospective work placement host so that we can ensure an agreement is in place to secure your placement opportunity.

To apply and secure your work placement position, the following documentation must be submitted and signed by both the host organisation and Australian Paramedical College.

        • Copy of students current Blue Card http://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/
        • Copy of students National Police Checks – no more than 6 months old from start date of placement
        • Australian Paramedical College Work Placement agreement – signed by student and host. Australian Paramedical College will contact the host organisation and then sign and send a copy to all parties
        • Copy of photo ID

Upon receiving this documentation, the host organisation will be contacted by our Clinical Placement Lead to ensure they are able to fulfil the requirements of your course.

When do I commence my work/clinical placement?

There are mandatory pre-requisites that you must have satisfied to receive confirmation to commencement your placement.

These include:

  • You must have completed all modules of training leading up to Clinical Workshop 1
  • Attended and been deemed competent in all simulated workplace practical demonstrations in Clinical Workshop 1.
